Buenos Aires
Here is finally a little summary of our nearly 3 weeks in Buenos Aires! It has been a great city to discover, with many places to explore and plenty of things happening. We have been particularly charmed by the way porteños (persons living in a port city, here Buenos Aires) use every bit of the public parks to play football, dance, ride their bikes, picnic, or, even more commonly, drink mate (traditional hot beverage). We first spent two weeks in the Palermo area, a bit north of the city center, where we enjoyed the many parks (zoological garden, Parque 3 de Febrero, etc.) and the hippodrome.
A beautiful Sunday at the Feria de Mataderos, a huge market where artisans from all over the country come to the door of the big city, to share their creations and traditions. All sorts of craft, plenty of food, traditional dances in the street, and even gaucho demonstrations.
The youngest gaucho, by far! He won the third place at the contest which consisted in catching a tiny piece of metal from a galloping horse!
Enjoying the Recoleta cemetery...yes, you read well, ENJOYING! The kids really liked touring around the 150 to 200 years-old graves, exploring every corner of this piece of Argentinian history.
La Casa Rosada, on the Plaza de Mayo, another piece of Argentinian history.
Meeting the local star...nearly as exciting as meeting him alive!
The new and shiny district of Puerto Madero.
Another beautiful Sunday...in Tigre, a town lying at the border of the Parana Delta, 30 km north of Buenos Aires. Surrounded by water, we went to explore it on a small boat. Impressive to see that a whole neighborhood is organized along the many river arms, with "streets", schools, floating grocery shops, etc.
20th- 27th of September: for our last week in the city, we moved to San Telmo, a beautiful and culturally rich area, closer to the city center and to the tango scene.
An evening at Bar Sur, admiring the wonderful dancers and enjoying the live music. It felt like jumping quite a few decades ago. One of the best souvenir of Buenos Aires, for all of us!
The Costanera Sur ecological reserve, a touch of green at a stone's throw from the city.
Concert at the Kirchner Cultural Center, listening to the National Symphony Orchestra.
Last day in Buenos Aires...a quick excursion to Caminito, the most colorful part of the city!
